Geothermal Installation Map

Did you know you can heat and cool your home by using the earth energy that is store right in your backyard? Geothermal heat pumps are increasingly popular, and it’s not hard to see why.

Our earth’s ground temperature is an excellent source of energy.  The temperature five or more feet underground stay steady all year round. So even when its 0 degrees outside, it still a constant 50 degrees underground.  During the heating season, a geothermal system uses the stored energy underground to heat your home.  In the cool season, a geothermal removes heat from you home and stores it underground.  Want to learn more about these systems? Our team at Hoveln Heating and Cooling can walk you through the entire process.

How Do Geothermal Heat Pumps Work?

Geothermal heat pumps work by circulate an antifreeze mixture fluid through a closed underground loop that is connected to a geothermal heat pump. On cold days, the earth heats the fluid. A geothermal heat pump then extracts the heat from the fluid and transfers it to your home. The heat is then delivered to your home through your duct system.

On hot days, the geothermal heat pump works in reverse. Like an air conditioner, it removes heat and humidity from your indoor air.  Instead of transferring it outside like a traditional air conditioner, it rejects the heat underground. The cold air is then delivered to your home through your duct system.

It is always recommended to have a back up heat source installed with your geothermal system.  The reason for this is on extremely cold day your system might not keep up. It is designed this way because otherwise the system would be oversized most of the year.

There are two main types of back up heat:

  • Electric resistance which is installed inside the unit. This type is considered an all-electric system.
  • Gas furnace which is installed in place of the geothermal air handler. This type is considered a dual fuel system because it can operate on electric or gas.

Some Geothermal Heat Pump Facts

There are four types of loop systems:

  • Vertical Loop
  • Horizontal Loop
  • Lake/Pond Loop
  • Open-Loop

There are plenty of reasons geothermal heat pumps are unique:

  • They are among the greenest systems on the market.
  • They do not burn gas making it the safest way to heat and cool your home.
  • They use up to half as much electricity as a standard HVAC unit. By making the switch, you can save up 70 percent on your heating costs and up to 50 percent on your cooling costs per year, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • They can produce 50% of the hot water for your home with the addition of a hot water generation pump.
  • They qualify for federal tax credits. The IRS offers a federal tax credit of 30% of the entire cost which help offset your initial investment.
  • They have longer life expectancies compared to traditional HVAC systems. You can expect your geothermal heat pump to operate efficiently for up to 25 years and the piping to last over 50 years. This long-lasting investment will increase your home value.

“Our Water Furnace unit had stopped blowing cool air. We contacted Hoveln on a Wednesday morning, and a technician came out that afternoon. His diagnostics showed a failed compressor, which he said was very rare but they would order a replacement. A compressor is an expensive part. Hoveln then sent out another technician on Friday to confirm the diagnosis. After considerable testing and consultation with the manufacturer, it was determined that the problem was not the compressor, but a controller for the compressor. That controller had a history of failures, and Hoveln replaced it under warranty. Even though the warranty had expired. We were only charged for one service call. Needless to say, we are very happy with the way Hoveln handled this problem.
We have been Hoveln customers for many years, and plan to remain so for many more.”

- Gary G.

“Hoveln again did a wonderful job. We had issues during the holiday season and they responded quickly to us and worked hard to diagnose the issue. Jeff, Sheri, Chris and Brant did a great job communicating and constantly followed up with us to be sure the problem was resolved. They are always fair, honest, and courteous.”
