Residential Geothermal Maintenance Services in Central Illinois

Geothermal systems are similar to conventional HVAC in one respect: They require occasional tune-ups to stay in top shape—though they need less maintenance than their above-ground counterparts. Regardless, geothermal heating and cooling systems benefit from a professional inspection and hands-on checkup.

Most systems can be checked just once a year rather than the biannual inspections of traditional HVAC systems. This is because all parts are used during the heating and cooling process, and unlike the more traditional air conditioner, the outside temperature does not matter.

Geothermal Professionals in Champaign, IL

Not all HVAC companies can work with geothermal systems. Technicians must possess knowledge and skills specific to geothermal heating and cooling and be able to spot problems above and below the ground.

Geothermal experience matters in diagnosis, repair, and installation. HVAC companies may say they work on geothermal, but not all companies know and understand geothermal.

Hoveln Heating and Cooling excels in servicing both conventional and geothermal systems. Since installing our first geothermal system in 1979, we have become the expert source for geothermal maintenance, repair, and installation in the greater Champaign, IL, metropolitan area.

We understand geothermal technology and can address any maintenance or repair issue. Call us at 217-643-2125 or request service online, and know you are in good hands with Hoveln Heating and Cooling’s knowledgeable geothermal professionals.

Why Geothermal Maintenance Matters

Geothermal systems typically need less maintenance than conventional HVAC equipment. The outdoor loops are durable and can operate for 50 years or more with simple maintenance upkeep and infrequent need for repair. Geothermal heat pumps can outlast air-source heat pumps by 10 years or more, typically running for 20 years or longer.

Preventative maintenance safeguards your investment in heating and cooling your Champaign, IL, home and lowers the risk of breakdowns by catching problems before they become costly and complicated. Regular maintenance can substantially improve energy efficiency, performance, and equipment lifespan.

What Does Geothermal Maintenance Involve?

Some of the same issues that affect air-source heat pumps can cause problems for geothermal heat pumps. Sometimes, the solution is as simple as changing a dirty air filter. Maintenance identifies issues before they become significant problems.

Our maintenance checkup includes:

  • Inspecting all mechanical and electrical components.
  • Measuring amp draw on all necessary electrical devices.
  • Checking the refrigerant levels.
  • Ensuring the capacity of the system meets manufacturer specifications.
  • Ensuring the blower wheel is clean and spins freely.
  • Making sure the drain line is clear and free of debris.
  • Changing the filter.

“As Hoveln customers since 2003, we’ve been very happy with their service and communication. The technicians always call with an ETA, and the company calls to schedule the yearly service (one less thing to remember!). When we’ve had to call for service (only twice all these years) they have gotten us on the books quickly.

Hoveln recently replaced our whole system, and we had no complaints from sales through installation. The install team that came was respectful of the property, used shoe covers/floor cloths along the whole path, and cleaned up when they were done. They also called a few days later to see if there were any issues!”

“We recently purchased a 20-year-old home with an aging geothermal system that needed replacement. Timing was critical to ensure the new system was installed shortly after closing, especially with the busy Thanksgiving week and the approaching deadline for the 2024 federal tax credits. Hoveln Heating & Cooling exceeded all expectations.

From our initial contact through the final decision, the process moved remarkably quickly. Despite the busy season with the first cold spell of the year, Brant Hoveln made time for us to visit their office, where he carefully walked us through our options. He was thorough and patient, ensuring we selected the best unit for our home.

The installation process was seamless. The technical team worked continuously, swiftly, and professionally. They left the work area spotless—without a trace of their presence—and completed the installation in just six hours. Punctual and highly skilled, they were supported by both Brant Hoveln and the owner, Jeff Hoveln, who were on-site to oversee the process.

The new geothermal system has been a game-changer. It’s incredibly quiet, maintains a perfectly comfortable climate, and operates with impressive efficiency. We had the chance to experience the old system for one night, and the difference with the new unit is remarkable.

Customer service has been excellent. The team is highly responsive by both email and phone, ensuring all our questions and concerns were addressed promptly.

Overall, we couldn’t be more satisfied with Hoveln Heating & Cooling. Their professionalism, responsiveness, and expertise make them a company we would confidently recommend to others.”

“Our Water Furnace unit had stopped blowing cool air. We contacted Hoveln on a Wednesday morning, and a technician came out that afternoon. His diagnostics showed a failed compressor, which he said was very rare but they would order a replacement. A compressor is an expensive part. Hoveln then sent out another technician on Friday to confirm the diagnosis. After considerable testing and consultation with the manufacturer, it was determined that the problem was not the compressor, but a controller for the compressor. That controller had a history of failures, and Hoveln replaced it under warranty. Even though the warranty had expired. We were only charged for one service call. Needless to say, we are very happy with the way Hoveln handled this problem.
We have been Hoveln customers for many years, and plan to remain so for many more.”

- Gary G.

“Hoveln again did a wonderful job. We had issues during the holiday season and they responded quickly to us and worked hard to diagnose the issue. Jeff, Sheri, Chris and Brant did a great job communicating and constantly followed up with us to be sure the problem was resolved. They are always fair, honest, and courteous.”

- Amy J.

“The team from Hoveln did a difficult, two-day installation of a replacement geothermal unit, which has performed splendidly. I couldn't be happier with the service and the product.”

- Elizabeth S.

“We have been customers of Hoveln Heating and Cooling since 2008. Could not be more pleased with their professionalism and service. Our technician is Brant and he does an outstanding job and is very friendly and courteous.”
